Russian-developed nootropic pair. Semax for cognitive activation in the morning; selank for anxiolysis in the evening or as needed. Approved for use in Russia, not in Western markets.
Mechanism rationale
Both are heptapeptides developed at the Russian Academy of Sciences (Semenova et al.). Semax is a synthetic ACTH 4-10 fragment with neuroprotective + cognitive-activation activity, working partly via BDNF expression and dopamine modulation. Selank is a synthetic tuftsin analog with anxiolytic activity, modulating GABAergic transmission + serotonin metabolism. The convention pairs semax in the morning (activation, focus) with selank in the evening or as-needed (anxiolysis without sedation). Russian Phase 2/3 trials of selank in generalized anxiety disorder showed efficacy comparable to medazepam (a benzodiazepine) without sedation or dependency liability.
Standard dose schedule
Semax: nasal spray 0.1 percent or 1 percent solution, 2 to 3 drops per nostril 1 to 2 times daily (morning + early afternoon). Subcutaneous injection 250 to 500 mcg also used. Selank: nasal spray 0.15 percent solution, 3 drops per nostril 2 to 3 times daily, OR sub-q 250 to 500 mcg once or twice daily. Effects begin 30 to 60 minutes after dose, last 4 to 8 hours per session-dose; cumulative effect develops over 2 to 4 weeks of daily use. Cycles 14 to 30 days continuous.

The honest read
Russian human trial data is real but most published in Russian or Russian-affiliated English journals, which limits Western verification. Mechanism work is reasonable; magnitude-of-effect data is harder to pin down for Western audiences. The community framing as a benzodiazepine alternative without dependency is plausible for selank but not Western-validated. Semax's cognitive-activation claim rests on smaller trials with mixed effect sizes. Both compounds are approved for medical use in Russia (Pharmasynthez) but not evaluated by FDA, EMA, or MHRA.
What both compounds share
Quality control on research-chem semax + selank in Western markets is variable; Russian-domestic supply is more reliable but harder to access. Both compounds may interact with other CNS drugs (benzodiazepines, SSRIs, SNRIs); users on psychiatric medication should consult a clinician before adding either. Pregnancy + breastfeeding off-limits. Selank's GABAergic component means additive effect with alcohol or sedatives is real.
