How it works

Mechanism + ceiling

Selective GLP-1 receptor agonist. Slows gastric emptying, increases satiety, improves glucose-dependent insulin secretion. The same mechanism powers the diabetes brand (Ozempic), the weight-management brand (Wegovy), and the oral form (Rybelsus, lower bioavailability and higher dose).

Weight-loss ceiling

STEP-1 reported 14.9% mean body-weight reduction at 2.4 mg over 68 weeks. Lower than tirzepatide head-to-head, but the safety dataset is much deeper (Ozempic has been on market since 2017).

Approval landscape

Approved for type-2 diabetes (Ozempic, Rybelsus) and chronic weight management (Wegovy) in nearly every regulated market. Supply has been the dominant constraint in the UK, Europe, and parts of Asia through 2025; allocation is improving in 2026 but Wegovy remains harder to fill than Ozempic in most apoteks.
